Many of them did not join the campaign. The local leadership becomes very important in getting the graduate voter to the polling booth. The local leadership is the first line of contact for the party with the voters. It is now emerging that the sarpanches have not shown any interest in the MLC elections.
Sources say that pending bills of various works taken up at the panchayat level have made the sarpanches despondent and they are said to be quite upset due to this. Hence they have deliberately kept away from the electioneering, say sources. The total pending bills amount to Rs 300 crore, according to sources.
Though 90 per cent of the sarpanches, ZPTCs and MPTCs are from the YSRCP, they kept aloof from the electoral process. They were upset at the non-release of the 15 finance commission funds. The result? The YSRCP suffered a shock defeat in all the tree Graduates constituency MLC seats recently.
