Sanjeev is also a key accused in the biggest match-fixing scandals that involved former South African Skipper Hansie Cronje, who lost his life in an aircraft crash that happened in 2002.
The Delhi police who filed a charge sheet in 2013, has sought the extradition of Chawla. In the Charge Sheet, the police have named five others including Chawla and late Cronje, for conspiracy to cheat, a criminal offence under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
Dr. G. Ram Gopal Naik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) said that Chawla will be in the police custody for the next 12 days and after looking at the progress in the investigations there is a chance of extending the remand.
Apart from Chawla and Cronje, Rajesh Kalra, Krishan Kumar, Sunil Dara, and Manmohan Khattar are the other accused. Manmohan Khattar lives overseas, while the three others stay in India.
