A fresh notification has been released for the bypolls to 17 assembly elections in Karnataka. The EC had issued a notification earlier, which was cancelled after the High Court intervened. This current notification is for the same set of constituencies.

The election was necessitated after the 17 MLAs, who abstained from the voting on the trust vote of Kumaraswamy and thus violated the provisions of the andi-defection law, were disqualified. After disqualifying the MLAs, Speaker has also resigned from his post.

The earlier notification was cancelled as the court has stayed the elections to take up the petition challenging the MLAs'  disqualification. Now that the new notification has been issued, the disqualified MLAs can contest only if the High Court gives a verdict before the filing of nominations.
